Washable Accent Rugs
Accent rugs are a wonderful way to brighten up any room without having to spend a large amount of
money replacing an entire carpet. They are both functional and decorative, and can be found in an
endless amount of colors, patterns, designs, shapes, and sizes. However, you may find that your
accent rugs are becoming dirty; rather than routinely replacing your accent rugs, purchase washable
In stores, washable accent rugs are sold in the rugs department among those rugs that are not
washable. In order to determine whether the rug will be washable, you can simply look at the tag of
the rug. The tag will give information such as the materials involved in making the rug, and
sometimes may tell you right on the tag how to wash it.
Materials that are washable include cotton and wool, as well as synthetics like olefin and
polypropylene. Just be sure that the rug is small enough to fit into a washing machine, otherwise you will have
difficulty getting it clean.
When preparing to wash your washable accent rugs, there are a few things that you should know
before just throwing them into the washing machine and hoping for the best. First of all, you should remove all the
loose dirt and debris from the washable accent rug. To do this, you can either shake the rug by hand, or you can
hang the rug up and beat it with a tennis racket or other object. The latter option will be more effective in
removing dirt from heavily dirtied rugs.
Next, you will want to put the washable accent rug into the washing machine with a little bit of
mild detergent. Do not use any harsh chemicals such as bleach as they can damage the fibers of the rug. Next, wash
on a lukewarm or cool water setting so that the colors in the rug do not fade. Finally, hang the rug to dry, do not
put into the dryer.
Washable accent rugs are quite easy to find, the most difficult part of the shopping process will
be finding the exact type of accent rug you are looking for. Stores with home decoration departments always have
some accent rugs for sale, and the majority of them are washable. Good places to check are Target, Wal-Mart, Home
Goods, Marshall’s, and T.J.Maxx.
More expensive washable
rugs can be found at higher-end home décor stores like Pier 1, Pottery Barn, and Restoration Hardware.
Of course, the Internet has countless options for washable accent rugs; Amazon.com and Overstock.com are great
places to start.
